The Benefits of a Programmable Thermostat

It's no secret that a programmable thermostat can save you money, however you may be surprised to find out how easy it is to install one. With ever-increasing Fort Worth energy prices, a programmable thermostat is a worthwhile investment in time and money for an avid do-it-yourselfer.

Most programmable thermostats come with four or more set points per day. Every set point is capable of making an adjustment to the temperature in the house. For example, you can set your thermostat to raise the temperature in your house 30 minutes before you get up in the morning. This allows you to have the house cooler during the night in the winter when you are in bed and may not need to have the house as warm.

The next set point can then lower the temperature of the house again after you leave for work and then raise it when you are on your way home. It is nice to come home to a warm house, especially if you did not have to pay to keep it warm all day. The last set point can lower the temperature one more time after you are in bed. Your thermostat will have a separate set points for Saturday and Sunday so you can make adjustments if you are home all day on the weekends.

Most home improvement stores carry a variety of programmable thermostats. Most thermostat replacements involve a few screws and four or five wires. It is a project that is well within the ability of an experienced do-it-yourselfer but if you are uncomfortable at all, you should consult a licensed heating and air contractor. If you supply the thermostat, it shouldn't cost more than a service call to have a contractor install it for you.

Whether you install it yourself or have a hvac contractor install it for you, a programmable thermostat can add convenience to your life and savings to your energy bill. The next time you open an expensive utility bill, you may want to consider what a new thermostat could do for your pocketbook the following month.
